What is this class?
This course is designed to provide students with a holistic introduction to the human voice by drawing on both interdisciplinary knowledge and hands-on practice. Past topics include vocal anatomy and acoustics, vocal gender and voice modification, voice acting, singing, and voice-related art forms, voice technologies, as well as sociolinguistic and psychological aspects of voice perception. This class is run by students with a variety of voice-related interests and backgrounds, so course content may vary each semester.
Who is it for?
Any student with an interest in learning more about the voice is welcome to apply! No prior experience with singing, voice acting, linguistics, etc. is required. We hope you’ll learn something new about the voice from this course, regardless of your background.
Required Materials
No specific requirements, but students should have a means of creating, editing, and listening to voice recordings in a quiet environment for the purpose of completing class assignments.
How to enroll
- Fill out the interest form (linked in the syllabus).
- Come to the first class.
- Students who complete both the form and attend the first class will receive a CCN they can use to add the class on CalCentral.
- Enrollment is first-come, first-served up to the room capacity.

The official course colors for the Voice DeCal are Reggie and larynx model blue, Trombone pink, and sometimes Miku teal.
